The “Year of the Rabbit 2023” in Kyoto, Japan.

As 2022 draws to a close, Shrines and temples are busily preparing for the influx of people that will come to pray and buy lucky charms for the new year. Many Shrines in Kyoto have large ema tablets with the new-years zodiac sign displayed in their precincts. We will take a look at some of these shrines.

The rabbit is the fourth animal in the Chinese zodiac. In Chinese culture, the rabbit is known to be the luckiest out of all the twelve animals. It symbolises mercy, elegance, beauty, longevity, peace, and prosperity. People born in the year of the rabbit are calm, peaceful, vigilant, witty, quick-minded, and ingenious. They avoid fighting and arguing at all times but are artistic and have good taste in life. This is why they pay close attention to small details and ensure everything is done correctly. They are insecure and sensitive people who don’t like to be criticised, which causes them to dislike changes. Rabbits are intelligent and will do everything at their best, making them good scholars.
